The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. The VA BHHCS provides primary, surgical, behavioral health, community living ce! nter (nursing home care), and domiciliary (residential rehabil! itation treatment program - RRTP) care for Veterans residing in western South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).
Note: The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 12. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Full unrestricted license DUTIES:
Incumbent identifies and evaluates individuals with hearing disorders in the reception and perception of speech, language, and other acoustic signals. Administers the full range of tests, including the testing of vestibular nerve function; evaluates the type and degree of hearing loss. Responsible for direct services of a remedial and sometimes preventative nature. Services include, but are not limited to: use of hearing aids; selection of monaural, binaural or cross hearing aids; issuance of ear defenders for prevention of acoustic trauma; routine hearing aid insp! ection and repair where indicated. Develops treatment plans for most di! fficult & complex cases. Recommends aural rehabilitation programs for patients with significant complicating conditions. Designs training plans to assist patient and caregivers in utilizing available hearing resources.
Location: Surgery/Specialty Service Line, Hot Springs, SD, however, this is a VA Black HIlls position and may require the incumbent to work at the Fort Meade campus.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:15pm

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
Education: Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. ["Accredited" means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program recognized ! by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
NOTE : [Effective] January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA [accredits] only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science.
Licensure: The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
English Language Proficiency : Audiologist must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chaper 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, stretching and lift lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; ; repeated bending (.5 hours); near vision correctable at 1! 3" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; hearing with aid.
Applicants must be ph! ysically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others. Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
Grade Requirements:
Creditable Experience
(1) Knowledge of Contemporary Professional Audiology Practice. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with contemporary professional audiology practice. This knowledge may be evidenced by one or more of the following:
(a)At least 1 year of active professional practice or its equivalent. Active professional practice means paid or non-paid employment as a professional audiologist engaged in the practice of audiology as defined by the appropriate licensing board.
(b)Academic course work leading to a doctoral degree in audiology or hearing science.
(2) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if i! t is both of the following:
(a) Work as a professional audiologist directly related to the position to be filled; and
(b) At a level comparable to audiology experience at the next lower grade level.
(3) Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a professional audiologist is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, an audiologist would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-tine work.
Grade Determinations.
GS-12
(a) Licensure. The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
(b) Education and Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. For positions involved in research audiology assignments involving no direct patient car! e, completion of a doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a ! related field is fully qualifying. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs identified for the assignment.
(c) Assignments. Audiologists at this grade level are independent licensed practitioners and are considered to be at the full performance level. Employees may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
1. Staff Audiologist. Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial (less that 25% of the time). The following KSAs are required:
(a) Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
(b) Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently;
(c) Ability to conduct assessm! ents and provide treatment interventions;
(d) Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals;
(e) Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and
(f) Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
