The Registered Nurse in the Associate Role on this unit is! responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide individualized nursing care. The nurse in this role will be expected to fulfill the following skills, including but not limited to: provide competent, safe care for a Wide variety of patients presenting for care and treatment, including trauma, cardiac, respiratory and those with complex medical needs. It also includes medical patients, such as diabetes and digestive disorders, hematology and acute disease processed in some cancer patients, renal, pre and post operative surgical complications It also involves teaching across multiple disease processes and post injury care. The nurse assumes responsibility for the outcome of nursing care during a specified work period. The nurse receives assistance from the full scope of nursing expertise. The nurse must have knowledge of and utilizes appropriate age-related patient protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of neonatal/infant, pediatric and adolescent! to geriatric patients. Some clinical skills expected but not ! limited to are: diagnosis and age-related assessment, medication administration, IV insertion and maintenance, wound and dressing care, cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation, assisting physicians and surgeons with procedures such as suturing, insertion of central lines, insertion of chest tubes, RSI and intubation.
Job Knowledge and Skills: Following a competency based formal orientation, competence and performance is expected. Must be able to critically think, be self-directed and able to manage several patients care during a shift. Must have effective communication skills to delegate responsibilities, collaborate, negotiate, and accomplish patient teaching, and work with patients, families, team members, and other healthcare team members. In addition, the Clinical Care Coordinator (CCC) manages healthcare team members , must have excellen! t communication skills to effectively counsel, support, and direct. Expected to lead others through change and crisis situations. Must have excellent critical thinking skills to problem solve issues. Must be able to delegate responsibilities to subordinates based on skill sets and scope of practice. Expected to receive and give patient care reports. Expected to assist in completion of annual reviews as delegated. Some other responsibilities within role include: chairing committees within the department, manage resource issues (staffing), oversee scheduling conflicts and facilitate orientation and on-going education of employees.
Must have clinical competence to serve as resource to subordinates or other healthcare team members. Expected to do some competencies that subordinates will not do, i.e., arterial line pulls. Must be self-directed with the ability to lead others. Must have effective communication, be able to critically think quickly under stress and respond! appropriately to crisis situations. Must be able to effectively commun! icate to physicians and other healthcare team members. Must be able to collaborate and negotiate with co-workers and other healthcare team members. Must be able to effectively manage conflict.
The RN functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules. The Sanford Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice (2004) and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (2001) as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation for nursing care delivery.
Required Skills
Graduation from a NLN or AACN accredited nursing program is strongly preferred. Graduate from an approved nursing program is acceptable. Bachelorâs Degree in nursing preferred.
BLS required; TNCC, ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire. Currently licensed with the applicable State Nursing Board and/or possess multistate licensure privileges! as required by position.
