Duties:
The location of this position is in the Maintenance & Repair Section of Engineer! ing Service of the VA Black Hills Health Care System, Hot Springs, SD.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Work involves installation of new equipment, troubleshooting, repair, or modification on approximately 540 tons of air conditioning equipment.
Refrigeration includes but is not limited to, walk-in freezers, walk-in coolers, dietetic equipment, lab equipment, ice machines, commercial and residential refrigerators and freezers, refrigerated air dryers and compressors for pneumatic controls. These systems are used to condition the air for areas such as surgery, ICU, patient rooms, Computer Building, telephone rooms, laboratories, Nuclear Medicine, and office areas.
These systems use a variety of methods for air conditioning, such as mechanical cooling, direct expansion, absorption, free cooling, glycol, steam coil, electric coils, and hot water heat. These units also humidify and dehumidify.
Must modify, alter, or substitute components and e! lements of the system in order to meet specified needs. Requir! ed to balance and maintain the systems so that the heat, air conditioning and exhaust is directed to meet critical climatic conditions.
Cleans tools, machines, and equipment and keeps work area clean and orderly.
Provides a safe working environment by adhering to safety control guidelines and reporting unsafe conditions.
If physically qualified, will be required to train and participate as an Auxiliary Fire Fighter.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications & Evaluations

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed! for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

Ability to Do the Work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN-OUT)
Knowledge of Repair of Air Conditioning Systems and Refrigeration.
Maintaining Refreigeration and Air Conditioning Systems and Equipment.
Ability to Read and Interpret Instructions, Bluep! rints, Work Orders, etc.
Ability to Identify Causes of Problems and! Determine Extent of Needed Repairs.

Physical effort : The equipment in the system is usually large and must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequent for long periods of time.
Working conditions : Subject to working in dust, dirt, asbestos, hazardous locations, and extreme temperature changes. Exposed to the hazards of moving machinery, shock and burns from electrical equipment, and the usual hazards of working with handtools, ladders, scaffolds, and working in construction areas. Subject to repeated ! prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases that may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs. Required to work outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants. The systems are large and refrigerants are used in larger amounts; therefore, the mechanic is subject to larger amounts of escaping gases when making emergency repairs. Occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments.
