The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. The VA BHHCS provides primary, surgical, behavioral health, community living center (nursing home care), and domiciliary (residential rehabilitation treatment program - RRTP) care for Veterans residing in western South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. DUTIES:
FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process in the OR/PACU/Endoscopy/Minor Procedures. Maintains established standards of nursing practice and standards of care.

2. Initiates and participates in ! interdisciplinary efforts for the OR/PACU, Surgical Service, and the He! alth Care System.

3. Implements an educational plan to meet changing educational needs surgical staff.

4. Develops staff to achieve exemplary standards of perioperative care and customer satisfaction.

5. Develops and maintains a quality improvement program for the OR/PACU. Collaborates with other disciplines to promote quality care in surgery and throughout the Health Care System.

6. Actively participates in professional liaison activities.

7. Assumes 24 hour accountability for staffing and patient care in OR/PACU.

CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING FACTORS:
a. Minimum 2-3 years Operating Room experience preferred.

b. Minimum 2-3 years of management experience preferred.

c. Minimum 2-3 years of progressive leadership experience with minimum of Associate Degree in Nursing required; but Bachelors Degree in Nursing preferred.

d. Prior experience in administration (i.e. as a nu! rse manager) preferred.

e. A keen awareness of customer service concepts

f. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.

g. Leadership abilities, which enable the incumbent to be an effective member of the Operating Room Service .

h. The ability to review and analyze budgetary information and effectively contribute to resource management decision- making.

i. Organizational skills in order to complete work in a timely manner.

j. Leadership style that embodies teamwork and individual accountability, while promoting enhanced clinical skills and professional growth of staff .

Location: Surgery Service Line - Fort Meade VA Medical Center with some travel to the Hot Springs VA Medical Center

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQ! UIRED:
Citizen of the United States.

Full unrestricted! Licensure, Certification, or Registration required

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA al! ong with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealthth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing:

Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry.

Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

Education/Experience Requirements:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a relat! ed field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
