Work to be performed at: This position will be located in the Surgical and Specialty Care Service Line at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System.

Work Schedule: Full time, Primarily Day hours are Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm plus on call every 3 rd weekend and every third evening.

Period of Performance: 08/15/2012 through 08/14/2013 and it may be extended for three additional years upon acceptable performance and all necessary state reviews and approvals.

Description of Services (includes but it is not limited to): The Surgical Technician is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. They participate with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. They use patient-centered care based on the patient's conditions, use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and accurately recognize, report, and record relevant patient information.

The Surgical Technician's duties will include, but are not limited to:

Set up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment.

Plan and discuss each procedure with surgical professionals and assure that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.

Prepare, organize, and maintain highly complex sterile instrumentation and surgical setup.

Observe and respond promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipate the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.

Utilize universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment

Demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in working in minor clinic for procedures scheduled in that area.

Assist in the cleaning of the Operating Room and equipment between surgical procedures and at the end of the day.

Assist the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies, and transportation to and from the OR.

Handle all specimens appropriately, including labeling, keeping organized on table and transporting to lab.

In conjunction with the circulating Registered Nurse, perform sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy.

Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedures. Sharps and sponges are handled per policy.

Recognize changes in patient condition including emergencies, perioperatively and takes appropriate actions in response to the patient emergent situation.

Provide patient information to the RN/Anesthesia Team for inclusion in the patient's plan of care.

Support the healthcare team through the reinforcement of patient education.

Organize/prioritize patient care activities.

Assist in training medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new Operating Room staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures.

Function as second circulator for complex surgical procedures.

Assist in scheduling cases, answering phones, and relaying messages as appropriate

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
License: Must have a Surgical Technician license.

Education: Must have graduated from an accredited medical/srugical technologist school.

Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

Experience: Must have at least 1 year of experience.

Language Skills: Must speak English proficiently.

Citizenship Requirement: Must be a citizen of the United States or a Permanent Resident (Green Card holder).

3) FD - 258 (Fingerprint checks)

4) Law Enforcement Agency checks

Professional References: Minimum of two to three references regarding related work with contact information. Must provide names and phone numbers to be used by the government to verify actual experience.
