DUTIES:
This position is assigned to the Sterile Processing Service (SPS), located at the VA Medical Center (VAMC), Sioux Falls, SD. In this position assignments include the collecting, processing, and decontamination of soiled supplies, instruments, and equipment, instrument preparation and sterilization, medical equipment maintenance, receiving, storing, and distribution of medical and surgical supplies, instruments and equipment. The section is comprised of four main areas of responsibility; decontamination, preparation, endoscope reprocessing and surgery prep.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4 pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-06 Specialized Experience: You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience, to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the Medical Supply Technician. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, Grade-05. Examples of Specialized Experience include: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. ( A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, salary/grade level, and the number of hours a week spent in such employment).

GS-06 Education: You must possess successfully completed six months of graduate education with courses directly related to the work of the Medical Supply Technician position such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Six months of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent six months of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 9 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the six months of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to six months of full-time study at the school attended). GS-06 Combination of Experience and Education: You must possess equivalent combinations of specialized experience (as described above) and successfully completed graduate education (as described above). You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
1. Ability to perform decontamination.
2. Ability to prepare medical equipment for use in hospital wards, clinics, and operating room suites.
3. Ability to perform sterilization.
4. Ability to provide quality customer service.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in a temperature controlled environment. It can be very hot. Employee must be able to observe safety precautions while working on wet floors, around a variety of cleaning agents, chemicals, and around the steam, plasma, and gas equipment. Employee is in contact with many types of hospital diseases and is required to wear protective clothing and use universal precautions. You stand and move from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets weighing up to twenty-five pounds from floor level to chest level and occasional requirements for similarly lifting baskets weighing up to fifty pounds. You regularly push loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds and move them over slight rises such as door sills. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, carrying medical supply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequent bending, stretching, and reaching. The work required dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment. The workday can be lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs.

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
