Surgical technologist, also called surgical or operating technologist, or scrub nurse, or scrub technologist; assists in operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthetists. Before an operation, the surgical technologist will provide assistance in preparation, set up the operating room with instrumentation, equipment and supplies needed to accomplish the scheduled surgical procedure. They assemble, adjust, and check all equipment to ensure working order. They may be asked to assist with checking the chart for completion, transport of the patient to OR, placement and positioning on the OR table and assist the OR/RN with the skin prep. They may also assist the CRNA with the induction of anesthesia, and after procedure complete, assist in transfer of patient to PACU etc. The surg tech will “scrub in” in accordance with MDMC OR policy and procedure, assemble instrumentation, be responsible for counting of sponges, needles, blades, and instruments with the circulating RN, gowning, gloving, and draping of the patient. During surgery, surg techs pass instruments etc. to surgeon and surgical assistants. They hold retractors, cut sutures, and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They are ever vigilant to sterile technique and know the protocol for the correction of contamination. They assist with applications of dressings, removal of drapes and the transfer to the patient to the vehicle of transfer. The surg tech will decontaminate all instrumentation after the case, help clean the OR and re-supply the OR in anticipation of the next case. The surg tech will transport instruments to decontamination for cleaning and the resterilization process. The surg tech follows the policy and procedure for initial decontamination, ultra-sonic cleaner, washer decontaminator, reassembly of instrument trays, and sterilization. The surg tech knows the parameters of packaging and the operation of the autoclave for both traditional and flash sterilization. The surg tech is able to prepare the endo scopes, assist with exams and the decontamination in both high level disinfection or the sterilization using the Steris equipment. The surg tech assists with all procedures in OR and assists the RN to maintain all standards of care. The surg techs are intregual to the “team approach” and keep the OR supervisor appraised of problems and solutions to maintain a high level of patient care, always striving for improvement in the delivery of quality. May be scheduled to work at other entities. CPR training will be mandatory for all MDMC employees providing direct patient/resident care or in direct contact with patients/residents. Required Skills

Graduate of a Surgical Tech program is preferred, but on-the-job training may be accomplished with appropriate education background (i.e. LPN, RN, Paramedic). All new employees will attend CPR training, and must be certified within 6 months for hire.

Credentials: Surgical technologist certification preferred.

License: Expected to be CPR certified every other year. Current license if applicable.
