The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. Time in grade at the GS-5 level required. DUTIES:
Responds to all station and mutual aid alarms. Performs such firefighting duties as determining the nature and extent of the fire, the appropriate action required, laying and connecting hoses, directing fire streams! , operating firefighting equipment, ventilating burning buildings, performing evacuations and rescues, administering appropriate emergency
treatment. Incumbent is responsible for driving all firefighting apparatus to the scene of a fire,following predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary.
Work Schedule: May be varied to generally reflect 56 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
Specialized Experience:
"Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent! to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progress! ion for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: ( Recommend use of bullets in listing examples. )
OR
Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-6 level.
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-6 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-6 . For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.!

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.
(1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire
department or brigade;
(2) rescue operations;
(3) detection, reduction or elimination of potential fire hazards;
(4) operation of fire communications equipment;
(5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or
(6) developing, implementing or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
This position also requires valid state driver's license.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, frequent bending and stretching/reaching, and pushing fully-loaded carts which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning them. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment, Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Workdays can be lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs.
