Anesthesia Technician

Description: Sanford Health is hiring Anesthesia Technician right now, this occupation will be placed in South Dakota. The Anesthesia Technician works under the direction of the Nurse Anesthetist and Anesthesiologist and assists them in the acquisition and preparation of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. Performs first line equipment maintenance and servicing such as cleaning and sterilizing, assembling, trouble shooting, and requisitioning, inventory control, supply waste control and ensuring proper charging. Direct assistance to the Anesthesiologists and CRNAs is expected. They assist with the insertion of invasive monitoring lines, anesthetic blocks and nerve blocks. They assist with the application of monitoring devices and with proper patient positioning. They assist the staff as needed during surgery. The Anesthesia locations are the Operating Suites, Labor and Delivery and Radiology. Each has a work room and/or supply area. Each work area is well lighted and ventilated. Part ! of the job involves cleaning, which repeatedly causes exposure! to decontaminating solutions, and exposure to infectious diseases and body fluids.

The Anesthesia Technician:
A. Is responsible for setting up the anesthesia machines in each operating room, including breathing circuits, cardiac and other monitors, suction and other disposable or recleanable apparatus that might be required. This includes the maintenance of standardized anesthesia carts to assure that appropriate drugs and supplies are available.

B. Calibrates oxygen analyzers using pipe O2. Any failure to calibrate must be checked in the same location with a working analyzer. Any subsequent failure to calibrate must be checked against tank O2.

C. Sets up IV lines and pressure lines for specialty catheters, including CVP, arterial, and pulmonary catheters. Sets up and calibrates cardiac output apparatus.

D. Removes all special and reusable material after cases and is responsible for cleaning in accordance with infection contro! l policies.

E. Assists anesthesiologists and CRNAs in placement of pulmonary artery catheters, central venous catheters and arterial lines. Knowledge of sterile technique is required to provide sterile hands-on assistance. Provides assistance to anesthesiologists performing regional anesthesia on patients.

F. Is available to respond during the conduct of cases for emergency anesthesia supply and equipment requests requiring careful and thoughtful response to a wide variety of requests in a stressful and rushed situation.

G. Is required to develop knowledge of equipment with which the anesthesia technician works, including (but not limited to) anesthesia machines, electronic monitoring equipment, point of care testing equipment, and sterilizing equipment.

H. Is able to adapt anesthesia systems to remote areas of the medical center at any time without direct supervision and in a timely manner. This includes assembling and operating life sup! port equipment including ventilators, monitors and laboratory instrumen! ts.

I. Has full operational knowledge of delicate laboratory instruments including blood gas analyzers, co-oximiters, glucometer and activated clotting time. Must have troubleshooting abilities and must know quality control techniques and regulations to perform quality control procedures and to calibrate equipment regularly.

When students are providing patient care, treatment, and/or services as a part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to supervise the students.

Required Skills

High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Graduation from an anesthesia technician program, or on the job training.

Certification by the American Association of Anesthesia Technicians and Technologists (ASATT) is preferred.
