DUTIES:
Employee will serve as a Health Technician (Optometry) within Specialty Care at the VA Healthcare System, Sioux Falls SD, conducting the full range of optometry evaluations of patients to determine the type and degree of vision loss. Duties include, but may not be limited to: Obtains ophthalmic history of patients. Obtains visual acuity, distance and near on patients including using Snellen or Jaeger acuity chart. Performs manual and automated lensometry. Performs tonometry using Tonopen or Goldmann Applanation tonometers. Performs fundus and ocular photography. Assists with frame selection, including fitting, adjusting and repairing glasses. Administers eye drops, performs eye treatments and changes dressings. Schedules patient appointments, including cataract surgery, laser and lid procedures. Obtains consent for surgeries and laser treatments and corrections. Provides education to patients/family members associated with ocular surgery and other ge! neral questions regarding eye concerns. Maintains patient medical recor! ds and other data required by the clinic, including electronic records. Orders and maintains inventory of intraocular lenses. Performs routine maintenance on ophthalmic equipment, including initiating requests for repair in a timely manner. Responds to patients questions and/or concerns with regards to vision concerns. Familiar with basic algebra and physics to determine various calculations such as spherical equivalents and transposing refractions.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday-Friday, rotating shifts between 7:30am - 4:30pm to total 40 hours biweekly.

PART-TIME:
This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA em! ployment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

Requires one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service, that required the application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this Health Technician (Optometry) position to be filled. Specia! lized experience includes: working experience in a medical ophthalmolog! y environment, obtaining visual acuity measurements, and performing tonometry, ocular photography, and manual/automated lensometry, including administering eye drops and changing eye dressings; obtaining patients medical history and completing patient progress notes in medical record; fitting patients with prosthetic ocular devices; ordering and maintaining inventory of intraocular lenses ; scheduling patient appointments; and utilizing a computer and various software.

One (1) full year of Graduate education (or higher) with courses directly related to the wor! k of this position meets the specialized experience requirement. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. (Transcript required)

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed Graduate education and specialized experience are also qualifying. (Transcript required)

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Knowledge of the principles and practices pertaining to the field of optomology.

Knowledge of clinical practices pertaining to treating patients with visual problems.

Knowledge of physical and mental conditions of patients in th! erapy.

Knowledge and experience operating office equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
The duties of the position require periods of sitting, standing and walking. Working with patients in the clinic and on the wards requires regular sitting, bending and standing. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a CRT of 1-4 hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and psychosocial problems and needs.
